Since moving to Nashville in 2016, Matt’s been passionate about studying the greatest soul/R&B session players in the biz (i.e. Spanky Alford, Cornell Dupree, David T. Walker, Al McKay) and has come up listening to the vocal guitar playing of B.B. King’s early records - later identifying with the rhythms of Bill Withers and Sly & the Family Stone.

Matt Laurence grew up in New York, starting guitar in 10th grade and was inspired by old school artists like Kool & the Gang, The Meters, Hendrix, George Benson, as well as the newer artists like Anthony Hamilton and John Mayer.

Since 2016, he’s attended the Wooten Woods every summer where he’s been mentored by musicians like Victor Wooten, saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), keyboardist Joseph Wooten (Steve Miller Band), Regi and Roy Wooten (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), saxophonist Bob Franceschini (J-Lo, Paul Simon), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers, Dead & Co.), and was called up to jam by Sinbad.
